J: Done with the bookcase!

C: All finished!

Ro: This was Carol’s favorite beer. She always drank it out of the can, I should have known.

（説明書を見ながら）このL字型のやつを、このたくさんの芋虫どもを使って横のやつにくっつけることになってる。なんにせよ、L字型のやつなんてないし、芋虫どもはみあたらないし、なんにせよ、足の感覚がない！

 

既出・be supposed to = ～することになっている

・attach A to B = AをBに取り付ける

・brackety = bracket + y = （名詞の形容詞化の用法；参考けっこう便利！名詞を一瞬で形容詞に変える方法 | 日刊英語ライフ (kiwi-english.net)）

bracket = 張り出し棚受け（L字型アーム）

・using-- → 進行形の分詞構文、付帯状況「～して」を意味する

参考分詞構文 ing例文 | 英語超初級者から中級、上級者への道 (jikojitsugen.net)

・bunch = たくさん、（副詞adv, adverb）大いに、ずっと

a bunch of = たくさんの～

・worm = 虫、いも虫。

文脈的に、ネジのようなものをいも虫に例えた発言ですが、worm自体に「ねじ」という意味もあります。

・whim = 気まぐれ、巻き上げ機

ここのwhimはどちらの意味でもないと思います。

whim-wham = 奇妙なもの、おもちゃ

このwhim-whamとwhim worm (guys) をかけた言葉遊びだと認識しています。

・whatsoevere → whatever の強調系

whatever = いったい何が（whatの強調）、～するものは何でも、（副詞）まあなんでもいいけど、どちらでも、なんにせよ

Do you want tea or coffee?  --Whatever.

こういう用法で、「どっちでもいいよ」と使える。日本人にぴったりな単語ですね。

・feel → 感覚がある、という意味もあります。

 

J: What’s this?

これはなんだ？

 

C: I have no idea.

わからん。

 

J: Done with the bookcase!

本棚できたぜ！

 

・主語省略（I've done with ~ ）

・bookcase = 本棚

 

C: All finished!

終わった終わった。

 

Ro: This was Carol’s favorite beer. She always drank it out of the can, I should have known.

これ、キャロルが好きだったビールだ。キャロルはいつも缶から直接飲んでたんだ。気づくべきだったよ。

 

・drink it out of can = 缶から直接飲む

　out of = （内側から）～の外へ

真意を汲みかねる文ですが、缶から直接飲んでた＝男らしい側面を見せていたから、（キャロルは男みたいに女を好きになっている、レズビアンである、と）気づくべきだったよ。ということを表現しています。

 

J: Ross, let me ask you a question. She got the furniture, the stereo, the good TV, what did you get?

ロス、一つ聞かせてくれよ。キャロルは家とステレオと、良かったテレビを持ってったけど、お前には何が残ったんだ？

 

Ro: You guys.

君たちだよ。

 

C: Oh, God.

おいおい。

J: You got screwed.

やられてんじゃん（本家訳＝アホか。　難しい！）

 

・screw = ねじこむ、だます

I'm screwed. = 行き詰った、八方塞がりだ

 

C: Oh, my God.

まじかよ。（本家訳＝おめでたいな。　上手い）

 

 

1-1-7 （10：25～）モニカのデートその１

M: Oh my God!

P: I know, I know, I’m such an idiot. I guess I should have caught on when she started going to the dentist four and five times a week. I mean, how clean can teeth get?

M: My brother’s going through that right now, he’s such a mess. How did you get through it?

P: Well, you might try accidentally breaking something valuable of hers, say her-

M: -leg?

P: That’s one way! Me, I, I went for the watch.

M: You actually broke her watch?

P: Uh-huh.

M: Oh my God!

うそでしょ！

 

P: I know, I know, I’m such an idiot. I guess I should have caught on when she started going to the dentist four and five times a week. I mean, how clean can teeth get?

そう思うよね。僕はほんとに馬鹿だ。彼女が週に4,5回歯医者に通い始めたときに気づくべきだったよ。つまりは、どれだけ歯がきれいになったんだよってことだね。（本家訳＝歯がすり減るよ）

 

・such a (形容詞) = そんな、非常に、とても

・catch on = ～に気づく、理解する、捕まえる

・~ times a week = 週に～回

・dentist = 歯医者

・teeth → toothの複数形

　tooth = 歯

 

M: My brother’s going through that right now, he’s such a mess. How did you get through it?

私の兄もちょうど同じ目に合ってるところなの。見るに堪えなくて。。どうやって乗り越えたの？

 

・mess = 混乱、乱れた状態

・get through = ～を通り抜ける、到達する

 

P: Well, you might try accidentally breaking something valuable of hers, say her-

そうだね、その人の高そうなものをつい壊してみるとか、例えば、、

 

・try V-ing = 試しに～してみる（とりあえずやってみる）

　try to - = ～しようと試みる（努力してしてみる）

・accidentally = たまたま、偶然に、誤って

・valuable = 金銭的価値のある、高価な

・say → Let's say の略

　Let's say = 例えば（というニュアンスの言葉；参考日常会話で使われる "Let's say" "say" の意味とは？ | ツカウエイゴ (tsukaueigo.com)）

 

M: -leg?

脚とか？

・go for = ~を選ぶ、～を支持する、～を狙う

・actually = 現に、実際に

スプーンをもって違う味のアイスを食べに行こうぜ（違う女を探しに行こうぜ）、と言っているわけですね。

正直なとこ腹が減ってるのか興奮してるのかわかんないや。（本家訳：食欲と性欲って似てるね）

 

・honestly =正直に

・horny = 角の、性的に興奮した、性的魅力がある（horn = 勃起　に由来しているらしいが女性にも適用されるとのこと）

M: What?….. What, you wanna spell it out with noodles?

・walk out = 出ていく、去る

・spell out = つづりを正式に書く、明確に説明する

いや大丈夫だ、むしろ五回目のデートで打ち明けるような内容なんだけど、、

・revelation = 暴露、新事実

more of a fifth date kinda revelation　で一つの塊と考えれば飲み込みやすいかと思います。

more of a fifth date　が形容詞、kinda　も形容詞で、どちらもrevelation にかかっている。

あら、じゃあ五回目のデートがあるってこと？

 

P: Isn’t there?

あるんじゃないかな
